boat tour

On the boat trip to Caño Island we will pass through the Sierpe river mangroves and scenic Drake Bay. After snorkeling in the crystal clear ocean waters around the island, a light lunch awaits you at the beach. A knowledgeable guide will lead you through a mysterious trail to an ancient cemetery, and will then narrate and explain one of the truly fascinating artifacts left by an ancient Indian culture.

Cano Island is located in the Pacific Ocean, 16.5 km from the Osa Peninsula. Caño island is a biological reserve and because of its unique flora and fauna the marine life is highly protected. The island itself is covered with tropical rain forest consisting of approximately 158 different species of plants, among which giant trees grow over 150 feet tall. White sand beaches and an exotic inshore coral reef bursting with color surround the island. It is one of the best spots in Costa Rica for scuba diving and snorkeling because of its outstanding underwater visibility (about 20 meters). There are many species of fish, turtles, manta rays, dolphins and whales. A well-maintained footpath leads uphill into the rain forest where pre-Columbian tombs are hidden along the trail. The island is important for its isolation, archeological value, and pre-Columbian historical Indian sites, with remnants of ceramic, grinded artifacts and a few famous spherical shaped stones that encompass historDeparting early in the morning from Dominical we will drive the Costanera highway along the Pacific Ocean for about 90 minutes to arrive at Sierpe. There we will stretch and have breakfast. Once we are fortified and ready for the adventure we will take a comfortable boat ride for 90 minutes to Caño Island via the biggest mangrove swamps in Central America. There is the opportunity to locate several species of monkeys, crocodiles, snakes, and a great diversity of birds. From the Sierpe River mouth to the island we will look back at the incredible views of Drake Bay, Marenco Biological Reserve, and part of the Corcovado National Park. There is also the exciting possibility to spot Humpback, Pilot, and Killer whales or dolphins on the way to the island. Upon arriving at the island we will snorkel for several hours, exploring the protected reefs and marine life, and then enjoy a picnic lunch at the beach. If you are feeling energetic you may continue on through the historical adventure and see the pre-Columbian trails, paths and burial sites that make the island a famous reserve
